Italy Witnesses Strike Over Militarization Policies, Gaza Solidarity

(MENAFN) A countrywide general strike swept across Italy on Monday as protesters voiced opposition to rearmament policies and showed solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The action disrupted daily life in multiple regions and reflected growing public discontent over government spending priorities.

The strike was coordinated after a call from the USB union along with various civil society organizations, under the rallying cry "We block everything." Demonstrators criticized the increasing cost of living, expanded defense budgets, and what they viewed as a state agenda that prioritizes weapons procurement over essential public services such as healthcare and education.

Protesters also condemned Israel’s military operations in Gaza and expressed backing for the "Global Sumud Flotilla," a civilian humanitarian mission aimed at reaching the territory. In several cities, including the capital Rome, large crowds assembled at Piazza Cinquecento, many carrying Palestinian flags and calling for an end to what they described as Italian involvement or support for Israel’s actions. The slogan "Free Palestine" was frequently chanted throughout the demonstrations.

The industrial action led to significant transport disruptions across the country. In Rome, one metro line was temporarily shut down, while Naples suspended service on a metro route. Milan experienced partial interruptions to suburban rail networks, and port workers in Livorno also participated in strike activities, contributing to broader logistical slowdowns.
