Italy Faces General Strike Over Military Spending, Gaza War
(MENAFN) Italy experienced a nationwide general strike on Monday as unions and civil society groups protested against government rearmament policies while expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, according to reports.
The strike was organized by the USB union and allied organizations under the slogan “We block everything,” and drew participants opposing rising living costs, increased military spending, and what they described as a national budget prioritizing weapons over public services such as healthcare and education.
Demonstrators also voiced opposition to Israel’s military actions in Gaza and showed support for the “Global Sumud Flotilla,” a civilian initiative aimed at delivering aid to the territory.
Protests took place in several cities, including Rome, where crowds gathered at Piazza Cinquecento. Many participants carried Palestinian flags and called on the Italian government to end what they described as its complicity with Israel.
Chants of “Free Palestine” were widely heard during the demonstrations.
The strike led to significant disruption across Italy’s transport network, with delays and cancellations reported in multiple regions.
